Vernacular architecture
Demolition by neglect
Vernacular buildings were normally well constructed and of sound materials but become increasingly fragile if not cared for over extended periods of time.
This casa colonica was beginning to deteriorate because the clay mortar binding the stones was rapidly being eroded. In a few more years the walls would have become unstable and fallen. I chose to arrest this process and restore the structure as our home.
The process of deterioration is slow but inevitable. The roof structure collapses, allowing moisture to penetrate interior as well as exterior surfaces. The fabric gradually erodes. In time the soul of the building is lost and it either collapses or is demolished for the salvage material.
Only fragments remain

Restoration for a new use? Demolition?

All of us up here in Ottawa are anxious to see the most recent photos that you have of this amazing project of yours, and of some of the little trees that you have lovingly planted.

Greetings from one of your neighbors a bit to the south in Valle San Giovanni (TE). Nice restoration job! Am curious as to your final cost (including cost of shell) per square meter. This helps me to give an estimate to others who have questions. Thanks.

I’ve enjoyed looking at the great task that you have taken on. Curious to know if you are interested in taking on more , the region of Molise; 9km. from Campobasso.
